Grain and livestock traders brace for higher volatility

Nov 13, 2024 at 04:40 PM CST

While there were several sizable market moves in response to the outcome of the presidnetial election, grain and livestock futures traded orderly and with general support after initally facing a mild downdraft.

Market participants are left to position themselves according to shifting expectations about political matters, including immigration and labor, trade relations, renewable fuels policy and more. The election is over, but now could still be the calm before the storm when it comes to political-related volatility.

Volatility indicators for grain and livestock have mostly continued to trend weaker through the election, so traders may be discounting the risks of major surprises that could pop up after the new government takes office in January.
