I have been running them for 5.5 years now. I like them, but they aren't for everyone. They require more attention than the average driver seems willing to give tires. If you know what a tire pressure gauge is and how to use it and are the type of driver who looks at his tires daily, then the pros of the tires outweigh the cons in my experience. I picked up over .5 mpg when I initially switched and continue to see those kinds of results Not to mention the weight savings.(I too pull a hopper.).My last set went 270,000 miles and my present set will do as well or better. I've noticed little difference in stability and have had no issues in rain or snow. However, I'm a very conservative type of driver (36 years, 3.8 million miles+). If it's icy, I slow down. I will say this, in mud they are helpless. For the highway, no problem.

The cons and what everyone will ask you is: what do you do if you have a flat? My responce is the same thing you do with your car or pickup, you stop immediately and get it fixed. The myth that it's OK to limp in after blowing a tire on a set of duals, is hard to dispel. But people still thinks it's Ok to do it. It's not! Bottom line, if you go into the wide base tires not wanting them, you will find every excuse to hate them. If you want increased fuel economy and less tare weight then they are for you. That's a question only you can answer, but in my case I'll never go back to duals. Hope that helps, jmho.

I run a fleet of 20 tractors and 35 hoppers all on wide base tires, and would never go back to duals. Like the guy before, the weight and fuel mileage will do way more benefits, than any other thing you can do to a truck. I do recommend some sort of tire pressure monitoring system. I have 20 drivers, and adding a Doran Tire Pressure monitor system, on all tires, has made a world of difference, it tells them the exact pressure of every tire on the rig, without getting out of the seat, combine that with taking a quick look at them everytime a driver gets out, and my blowouts, and down time has decreased greatly. If you are an OO you will be fine with them, but if you have company drivers, education, and monitoring is the key! People are worried about finding tires if they do have a blow out, well I run from CA to PA and everything in between, and have never had to go more than 1 hour away for a tire. Stay AWAY from Bridgestone, Michelin is the class of the field in widebase, you may pay a little more, but well worth it. My trucks are avereging over 260k miles on drivers, and my trailers are running 3 full years between trade in without changing tires, because I go with a Bandag recap straight out of the factory. Good luck, I think if you use your head, you will reap the benefits of wide base tires.

I run 105 psi, in my drivers, and trailers. They make 2 sizes of wide base tires, a 44550R 22.5. which is the same as a low pro 22.5. And they make 45550R22.5 which is the same as a tall 22.5. The most widely used is the 445. They are the most readily available should you need one across the country.

I was listening to ATBS on the radio and they were saying to run 130 psi if u have wide base singles. also on dave nemo's show rob beckett is saying to run 130 psi in your steer tires. anyone tried this?

I only run 100 psi in my 45550R22.5 XDN 2. And only 105 psi in steers, seriously over-inflated at 130 psi cold let alone at highway tempratures. My XZA-3 are only rated 110 psi max cold.

I specced wide base on my last new KW's in '09-10. When I specced new Timptes in '12 I ordered with wide base. I'm one of the few in NW KS that runs them on hoppers, but my trucks weigh 24,500 with fuel, so I fell it's an option that pays. We are a very small fleet and we run local, so I'm never to far from help if we need it. Because of this I don't get the mileage some are claiming, but often times we haul 30-50 miles and turn around and go for another....so that has a huge effect on our wear. I also specced the Timptes with a tire inflation system, that has seemed to be a wise investment. Overall, I feel we have benefitted from wide base. As the poster above has stated, in the mud they are worthless, can't comment much about snow as we are "fair weather" truckers and stay home if the roads are questionable.

I've been on super singles for about 7 yrs now I wouldn't go back to duals. Use Michelin tires tried Bridgestone they were junk. I run 115 psi in them as that's what the michlen tire rep recommended also i use nitrogen instead of regular air the tires run cooler and seem to last longer. I also rotate the tires every 50-60k miles and that seems to do good. I pull end dump and like anything else I got to take care of ur equipment if u want it 2 last and yes I run every where I have no problem in the snow
