Rates rates rates always complaining about rates

Look, I keep saying it. Trash begets trash. If you are hauling trash rates or offering trash rates. That says all we need to know about those brokers, traders, shippers, and operators. Don't haul for them if the rate doesn't cover the operating cost. But make sure you truly know your operating cost. As a single truck owner operator, that means everything you spend both for the trucking business and all your personal bills as well. If you don't truly know your operating cost, you'll be taken out with the rest after a couple of years. So you have to make a decision. Do you want to be successful, or do you want to just skimp by until you're bankrupt? Are you just throwing your receipts in an envelope and then having your accountant figure out out at the end of the year? Or do you have a PnL that tracks your operating expenses? If not, you better get one. I can tell you at any time what my cost is per mile, per ton, per bushel, or flat rate. If you don't know this, what the heck are you even doing out here. If you don't know your cost, you aren't an owner operator. You are just a streering wheel holder that is in debt for equipment.

Well if you want to get rich in a hurry there is Lubbock to Az for 1.45 per mile for a floor. Unbelievable and you know somebody will say it's fuel money.

Voluntary operating authority revocations slowed for the first time in 2 years in September, but the trucking sector still has 92,000 more carriers of varying sizes than we did in 2020. The freight recession of the past 2 years shook loose the financially unstable, and those who chose to retire rather than work for cheap, or even at a loss. I personally chose to become a company driver for 3 months this year until things picked back up. Now that I'm back to running my own truck again the rates are still often times lower than I would like, but the work seems more plentiful. That tells me more carriers have left the industry. If and when the economy gets stronger the rates should tighten up a bit for those who've made through the recession. Best of luck to all.

That is a disgusting rate! Anyone who would take a load for that price into a dead area is not real bright. I have been doing this a long time and have said time and time again, know your cost to operate and stay above it. That does not mean that every mile has to pay $3-4 per mile (it would be nice if they did) but rather at the end of the week you can take your net divided by your miles and you have your business nut as well as your personal nut covered and you have a sheckle or two left in your pocket, you are doing ok. We all cut a fat calf during the covid days! We have cut fat calves in the past also but with every pat calf cut comes a time of eating scraps until we see a turn in the markets. This normally takes a bunch of guys, who come from other sectors to try to cash flow their bills, to go broke and leave the industry. We are seeing this correction coming to the end, I hope! Art, you have been on this forum since before I started reading post. You have seen this in the past and with gods grace, will hopefully see it in the future! All I can say is that the ones who don't get complacent and go out and over spend in the good times will survive and go on to complain about things the next time they happen.

Hope you all live well and prosper! Good luck and stay profitable!

I started with this site when it was free. Don't know how long ago that was.
