Is it a miss or just a noise? If a miss first thing to do is check injectors. Unplug one at a time where the wire goes in the head. With the engine running it should miss worse when you unplug one. If you find one that when you unplug it there is no difference in the way the motor sounds that's your problem cylinder.

pull valve covers and look to see if rocker arms are all moving like they should. Pull jake brakes and check valve settings and for anything loose and sloppy. Inspect push rods. Ect ect ect. But for 3k they could have replaced the whole top end. I would find a new shop. If truck still runs fine just has a ticking noise I would bet it an exhaust leak.

I had 2 n14s, learned hard way. If you are using TA for fueling you will be going Thur injections. Use any other fuel petro, loves, j or pilot. This might be root cause of problem.

Just had a similer problem with one of mine. The best way to check and see if it is an injector issue is to get yourself an infrared thermo gun from Home Depot. Shoot each of you cylinders on the exhaust side. The ones that are running cool are the problem, then you can unhook that injector and find out if it is indeed bad. We did this no problems with any of the injectors, truck was missing on and off, rattling on and off.

Took it to a local Volvo dealer, they spent 8 hours troubleshooting at $135.00 per hour only to find out that the N14 has a filter on the fuel pump (that none of us knew about). Apparently my driver had bought some crap fuel at a Pilot in Iowa and the crap stopped up this filter, it is very rare for this (in line fileter) to go out. It will take them three days to get the filter. The truck corrected itself once they took the filter out.

Cost of filter: $20 - $30
Cost to find out it was the filter: $1080.00

I am not upset with the amount of time it took them to trace all of the fuel lines for the restriction. I just wish the shops had a minimum charge of $500 per day for the troubleshooting fees, at least wise I would know anytime I was putting it into their shop that it was going to cost that. I have very rarely had it cost less than a $1000.00 for them troubleshooting fuel line issues, and wiring problems.

Take a look where we had our problem, maybe you got some of this crappy biofuel clogging up that filter on the fuel pump. (by the way they call it a screen, but it really is more like a filter).

Good luck.

Yes on top of pump there is a plug with a flathead slot. Underneath is a filter. Also there is usually a check valve in the ecm cooler plate on the exit side. And the cooler plate can fill up with junk.

i run the air dog system on a couple trucks so far the drivers like it. I hook the hose from the tanks right to the air dog bypassing the cooler plate. And the out put line right to the pump. I run the return line from the air dog through the cooler plate. Seems to work so far.

i worked one of my trucks today. That had a miss and down on power. Seems the valves were set to tight. Had overhead run by a local shop because I was busy. After I reajusted. Driver says truck is like new?

I real like the N14 and have been learning it little issues over the past years. But so far have had good luck.
