I Wish Someone Had Taught Me This 20 Years Ago in Bulk Trucking

Looking back, we’ve all had moments where we wish we could rewind the clock and do things differently. A financial advisor recently visited our office and shared something that stuck with me: If you invest $730 per year for 45 years, you’ll have $1 million based on a 10% return. It’s a reminder of how small, consistent actions can yield massive results over time.

That got me thinking about the bulk trucking industry—what would I do differently if I could start over? Of course, we learn and grow through mistakes, but here are a few things I’d do differently, and hopefully, they’ll help someone out there today:

  1. Recognize the opportunity in bulk trucking.

    • This industry is just as full of potential as any other mode of transportation.
    • It’s easy to let the negativity overshadow the positives, but I’ve seen firsthand how companies that weather the storms thrive in the long run.
  2. Serve your clients exceptionally well.

    • Don’t just aim for on-time deliveries—aim to improve the entire process.
    • Companies that stand out are constantly innovating and finding ways to add value. Those efforts don’t go unnoticed.
  3. Cut out distractions.

    • Social media, endless notifications, and even unnecessary tasks can rob your focus.
    • Be bold in protecting your time. While social media can be a great tool for connecting with clients, it’s easy to fall into the trap of mindless scrolling.
  4. Don’t fear the future.

    • Agriculture is essential. As long as humans and animals exist, there will be work in ag and trucking.
    • Freight cycles come and go every 4–5 years. When times are tough, remember that it’s not the end—it’s just another cycle.
  5. Find a coach or mentor early on.

    • Accountability is key. A good coach can help you stay focused and push through challenges.
    • Even the most successful people credit their growth to the guidance of mentors and advisors.

In Conclusion
The opportunities in this industry are endless for those willing to take them. Be encouraged by the resilience and integrity of the people in bulk trucking—our industry is filled with strong values and faith, and I thank God every day for placing me here.

If you’re attending the upcoming bulk freight conference, I’d love to connect—it’s going to be incredible! If I can help in any way, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
