Some hazmat loads can be hauled with $1million coverage and others $5million(or more).
I am trying to figure out where to find info on the insurance requirements of all un numbers/ hazard classes.
I cant find it and my insurance agent is no help.
Any hazmat haulers know where i can find this info? Thank you

Hi Mike. I'm pretty sure the only difference in requirement is due to the reportable quantity.
I'm not sure going hazmat would be cost effective for one truck.

For our 5 company trucks the insurance alone is roughly $84.5k per year which includes the workers comp.

We carry
$5mil liability
$250k cargo
$1mil workers comp/occupational disease
$1mil side policy but I don't remember why

The insurance requirements are set in Washington.

The 5 million coverage is for the liquid tank haulers, gasoline, propane and anyone that hauls a Class 1 substance like Explosives. Before you start hauling hazardous materials, the drivers are supposed to go through a hazmat course so they know the risks of the material transported. I went through the training at Haz-Mat Environmental Group in Buffalo NY when I drove for them. Other places offer the training also.

I work with a Chemical processor. We actually have two different companies. We just revised our insurance and saved $20,000.

According to DOT, if you haul "Hazardous substances, as defined in 49 CFR 171.8, transported in cargo tanks, portable tanks, or hoppertype vehicles with capacities in excess of 3,500 water gallons; or in bulk Division 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 materials, Division 2.3, Hazard Zone A, or Division 6.1, Packing Group I, Hazard Zone A material; in bulk Division 2.1 or 2.2; or highway route controlled quantities of a Class 7 material, as defined in 49 CFR 173.403, OR Any quantity of Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 material; any quantity of a Division 2.3, Hazard Zone A, or Division 6.1, Packing Group I, Hazard Zone A material; or highway route controlled quantities of a Class 7 material as defined in 49 CFR 173.403." THEN $5 millon is required."

If you haul, "Oil listed in 49 CFR 172.101; hazardous waste, hazardous materials, and hazardous substances defined in 49 CFR 171.8 and listed in 49 CFR 172.101, but not mentioned above", THEN $1 millon is required.

We have one company set up to haul all of our packaged hazardous materials and one company set up to haul all of the bulk (over 3,500 gallons) materials.

Hope this helps. I had to provide my insurance agency with this data in order to get the underwriter to write our policies. The underwriter thought that all hazmat haulers had to carry $5 millon coverage. It is definitely good to know the regulations.

Thanks for the input guys. I wish there was a for sure thing published in plain english for dummies. I am still unsure. My local DOT officer will be getting a call from me, and maybe... just maybe he can clear this up.
