We are upgrading two of our hoppers and had the idea of replacing one of the hoppers with a end dump instead. We only haul grain with our hoppers but have potential bussiness for and end dump or live bottom. Our reasoning for an end dump is strictly weight and cost. Anyone ran into trouble hauling grain with a end dump? Thanks in advance for any comments.

Make sure that where you unload has enough height in their pit area to be able to get the trailer all the way up. One thing in my part of the world is that the feed mills have pretty much banned end dumps because of having to use the grain gate to dump. Their big issues was dust control and a bigger mess to clean up when you trip the gate to clean out. The river terminals at Catoosa have no issues with end dumps becaus they are set up to dump them.

Some of the feed mills around here had banned dumps becouse guys would haul rock on return trip and the mill was getting rocks in the milling equipment. Of course a lot of use with hoppers were hauling rock also. A dump can be a versatile piece of equipment. Allowing you to haul Many of the same loads as hoppers, belts, floors, flatbeds, and even vans.

End dumps is all we run, not sure about your comment about your reasoning being weight and cost. They cost more and weigh more, the trailer weighs more, + the 50 gallons of oil and wet kit. They are ALOT more versatile in our opinion. We haul grain, feed, fertilizer, rock, coal, sawdust, lime, gypsum and on and on. All of our trucks have brooms on them and the guys use them as needed. Have never had a complaint about cross contaimination before.

You can haul more weight with a hopper. With a end dump you carry the extra weight of the PTO & hyd. oil. plus the weight of a high sided trailer.
