If you are yousing it for mostly highway work they are pretty good on fuel. However a bit underpowered for city work and climbing hills. It all goes back to how it is geared and so forth. Parts are cheap and readily available. The only real downside is it's a detroit, coming from a cat guy.....

If you don't have customers in the Socialist Republic of California I wouldn't own an emissions truck, rather search for a used glider or restore an old truck. Sooner, or later we'll all have to drive trucks with dpf, but for now I can operate a older pre emissions truck for approximately 14 cents per mile in maintenance cost verses many emissions trucks costing guys upwards of 15 to 20 cents per mile in maintenance expenditures.

From just my observations..( worth a couple of pennies) it seems that if you find a newer truck 08 up to the DEF..chance is the truck has problems with either the engine..particulate trap or sensors..and it was unloaded ..the DEF trucks area little better.. But dumping exhaust particulars into the engine eats them up..some are only getting 2-3 hundred thousand..also pulling 80,000 with a smaller cube engine ..will have a shorter engine life..like the other post..if you don't go into piers or California..look at a pre 08 without all of this new stuff on it..or go with new..as for cubes..look at getting a little bigger cube engine..you will be happier at the end of the day...we used to have 220s 250s270s 280s 300s and the list goes on and look what we drive today..there is a reason why..

In my book exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with variable pitch turbo is to much emissions bullcrap. Pre 2004, or glider kit is my preference, but if someone is willing to deal with egr, dpf,and egr that's none of my business.
