I have seen a guy sand them down and then repolish them. They looked like new when he was done

I own Midwest Wheel Polishers here in Illinois and we have polished aroud 50 dura brights the past few years esp. the 1st generation wheels....Dura bright is not a sealeant on the wheel its actually forged in the aluminam itself....we have 2 big machine where we sand them starting with a 120 grit finishing with 360 grit..then we polish them out with 2 types of polish..when a Alcoa dura bright wheel is refurbished it is still a durabright... now the flacky plastic on your wheel could be Acuride acushield.....they actually spray sealer on them with those we have to strip it with a cleaner like acid the start back by sanding and polishing.....Too bad we're so far apart we'd love to polish your wheels!!! Have fun...

Yes you are correct they are Accurides. What a low class wheel. I ended stripping the coating with a DA and 400 grit and a small wire brush we use for cleaning aluminum prior to welding. The coating hides the fact that there are BIG surface scratches in the surface under the coating, so you have to do a lot of sanding no matter what. I also found out that Accuride an Gunite are the same company. I don't have any use for Gunite products either. Never made sense to me to have a slack adjuster that in order to losen you physically force the mechanism to ratchet backwards then wonder why it fails. After the sanding I went back with 3 different polish pads and rouge and I like the end product, but I hope I never have to do that much work again.
Thanks for the support though guys. I will remember the guy in ILL. If I get there I will come by.
